On 15 September, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Gabrielius Landsbergis visited Riga, Latvia, where he met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Latvia Edgars Rinkēvičs.

The chiefs of diplomacy of the two countries discussed topical security issues of the region, assistance to a fighting Ukraine and sanctions on Russia. Landsbergis also informed his counterpart about yesterday’s visit to Odessa, Ukraine, where he and Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba discussed security issues pertaining to the Russian-attacked Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant.

“We have to consolidate international support for Ukraine, against which Russia has launched an unprovoked, unjustified war, thus challenging and threatening the whole rules-based global order. With Rinkevičs we agreed that in order to avoid a nuclear catastrophe in Europe, it was necessary to completely expel Russia's occupying forces. I am glad that here, in Riga, with the Latvian Foreign Minister, we share a common vision of how to fight the aggressor. This only shows once again that a strong bond of brotherhood between Lithuania and Latvia has formed," Landsbergis said after a working meeting.

The Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania and Latvia in Riga also conferred the 2022  Balts' Award on the Latvian translator Dace Meiere.

Dace Meiere is a famous Latvian translator, who translates from the Lithuanian language into Latvian. Thanks to her, Latvian readers have the opportunity to get acquainted with the works of contemporary Lithuanian authors, such as Sigitas Parulskis, Undinė Radzevičiūtė, Tomas Dirgėla or Kristina Sabaliauskaitė. By promoting the Lithuanian literature in Latvia, she has contributed to the creation of a common Baltic cultural life space.

In 2021, the award was given to the Lithuanian scholar, Doctor of Philology and Humanities Regina Kvašytė.

On the same day Minister Landsbergis participated in a presentation of a study “Strategic Commitment of Choices for Latvia and Lithuania in the Age of Disruption and Great Power Rivalry”. The study on prospects of cooperation between the two countries was initiated by the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania and Latvia. It builds on the joint report about the development and development prospects of bilateral relations between Lithuania and Latvia that was initiated and prepared by the Governments of Lithuania and Latvia in 2012. The study was prepared by former diplomats and bilateral relations experts Neris Germanas and Gints Jegermanis, who did the bidding of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania and Latvia.

"Our bilateral relations are friendly and all inclusive. However, the bilateral cooperation between Lithuania and Latvia needs constant attention and encouragement. This is what we seek through these initiatives", said Landsbergis.
