AT LITHUANIA'S SIDE EVENT, CALL FOR INCREASED AWARENESS AND COOPERATION IN THE FIELD OF CHEMICAL MUNITIONS DUMPED AT SEA

On Lithuania's initiative, a panel discussion on "Problems arising from chemical munitions dumped at sea: Need for increased awareness and cooperation" was held in UN Headquarters in New York. It is part of a follow-up process of the General Assembly resolution on chemical munitions dumped at sea, tabled by Lithuania and adopted by consensus in 2010. The second resolution on this topic is now being negotiated at the Second Committee of the General Assembly.

At the event, Mr. Terrance Long, Chairman of the International Dialogue for Underwater Munitions, presented the extent and complexity of environmental effects caused by chemical munitions dumped at sea. He also briefed the participants on developments in the related fields of science and technology. Mrs. Rita Kazragienė, Deputy Permanent Representative of Lithuania to the UN, presented the draft text of the resolution that was tabled on behalf of Member States of the European Union. The negotiations on the text are currently ongoing and are expected to conclude by the end of this year.
