FOREIGN MINISTER AND THE U.S. SECRETARY’S SPECIAL ENVOY AND COORDINATOR FOR INTERNATIONAL ENERGY AFFAIRS DISCUSS ENERGY ISSUES IN THE BALTIC REGION
On 24 September, Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Audronius Ažubalis and Ambassador Carlos Pascual, the U.S. State Department’s Special Envoy and Coordinator for International Energy Affairs, discussed energy isolation issues of the countries of the Baltic region.
The Lithuanian Foreign Minister thanked the United States for continued support of Lithuania’s strategic energy projects, which aim at increasing the country’s energy independence, and for the U.S. Department of State’s support to the NATO Centre of Excellence for Energy Security in Vilnius.
The meeting discussed Lithuania’s concerns about nuclear safety of the non-transparent nuclear projects that are currently being implemented in Belarus and in the Russian region of Kaliningrad.
In 2011, Ambassador Pascual, the U.S. Secretary’s Special Envoy and Coordinator for International Energy Affairs, succeeded Ambassador Richard Morningstar, who was an active supporter of Lithuania’s goal to diversify and balance the country’s energy market.
