LITHUANIA ACCEEDS TO THE CONVENTION ON THE REDUCTION OF STATELESSNESS

On 22 July in New York, the Permanent Representative of Lithuania deposited with the UN Secretary General instrument of accession to the Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness.

The Convention sets out progressive international standards aimed at reducing statelessness. By acceding to the Convention, Lithuania emphasizes respect for those standards and human rights. Facilitated conferral of citizenship to individuals residing in Lithuania is conducive to their successful integration into society, dignified living and full realization of their rights and duties.

The Convention will enter into force for Lithuania on the ninetieth day after the deposit of its instrument of accession. Nevertheless, implementing national legislation is already in place and fully effective.
