Lithuania established diplomatic relations with the Republic of Kiribati

The Permanent Representatives of the Republic of Lithuania and the Republic of Kiribati to the United Nations today signed a Joint Communique formally signifying the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries in New York at the Kiribati Permanent Mission to the United Nations.

This decision was taken to reinforce and further develop the mutually beneficial relations between their countries and their peoples, in accordance with the objectives of the Charter of the United Nations as well as the provisions of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of 18 April 1961.

This cooperation has grown rapidly in recent months on human rights and sustainable development issues and in particular, since the opening of the Kiribati Mission in New York in August 2013.

The Joint Communique was signed at a meeting in New York today between Her Excellency Raimonda Murmokaitė, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, and Permanent Representative of the Republic of Lithuania to the United Nations and Her Excellency Makurita Baaro, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary and Permanent Representative of the Republic of Kiribati to the United Nations.

"This agreement signals my country, Lithuania’s, strong commitment to building closer and strong relations with Kiribati, with the Pacific region, and with the UN membership," said Ambassador Murmokaitė. "We look forward to working with Kiribati to build economic, social and technical cooperation as well as advance the growing friendship between our two countries."

"I welcome this as a very positive step in the right direction signaling our commitment from Kiribati to work closely with the Republic of Lithuania and with the international community to build stronger partnerships and forge new mutually beneficial opportunities with all countries and peoples in this increasingly interdependent world," said Ambassador Baaro.
