LITHUANIA INVITED TO JOIN UNDEF ADVISORY BOARD

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon invited Lithuania to become a member of Advisory Board of the United Nations Democracy Fund (UNDEF) startong from 1 January 2012.

Lithuania is honored to contribute to the work of this important institution, established by the Secretary-General in July 2005, with the primary purpose of supporting democratization around the world.

UNDEF supports projects that strengthen the voice of civil society, promote human rights, and encourage the participation of all groups in democratic processes. The large majority of UNDEF funds go to local civil society organizations -- both in the transition and consolidation phases of democratization. In this way, UNDEF plays a new and distinct role in complementing the UN's work with Governments to strengthen democratic governance around the world. In 2011, it surpassed 120 million dollars in contributions.
