LITHUANIA PLEDGES ASSISTANCE TO SYRIA AT PLEDGING CONFERENCE IN KUWAIT
Lithuania pledged $27.000 of humanitarian funding at the International Pledging Conference for Syria convened by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and hosted by Kuwait on 30 January 2013.
Lithuania pledged $27.000 of humanitarian funding at the International Pledging Conference for Syria convened by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and hosted by Kuwait on 30 January 2013. The funding is in addition to finansial assistance disbursed in 2012.
"While concerned by the spill-over effects of the crisis and inability of international community to agree on a roadmap out of the crisis, we call all parties to abide by International Humanitarian Law and respect humanitarian principles ", said Lithuanian representative Ambassador Dainius Junevičius at the Pledging Conference. Ambassador Junevičius pledged Lithuania's continuous support of humanitarian efforts and commended efforts by OCHA, ICRC and other humanitarian organisations.
Lithuania expressed its support to countries hosting the refugees from Syria.
According to the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, the violence in Syria has led to the killing of over 60,000 men, women and children. The United Nations estimates that 4 million people from Syria are in need of assistance.
