On 14 August in New York, the Permanent Representative of Lithuania deposited with the UN Secretary General instrument of ratification of the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance.
The Convention is the first universal treaty that defines enforced disappearance as a human rights violation and prohibits it. Besides the requirement to criminalize enforced disappearance (incertain cases - as a crime against humanity), the Convention also covers such aspects as prevention, protection and rights of victims, special situation of children, international cooperation, and establishes the Committee on Enforced Disappearances.
The Convention will enter into force for Lithuania on the thirtieth day after the deposit of its instrument of ratification. Lithuania will become 40th state party to the Convention.
