LITHUANIA TO CHAIR SECURITY COUNCIL COUNTER-TERRORISM COMMITTEE AND CAR SANCTIONS COMMITTEE
Starting on 1 January 2014 Lithuanian Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Raimonda Murmokaitė, will chair the Security Council Counter-Terrorism Committee (established under UNSCR 1373), the Working Group established under UNSCR 1566, and a newly established Sanctions Committee concerning the Central African Republic.
Lithuania has also been appointed Vice-President of the Security Council Sanctions Committee 1533 (the Democratic Republic of the Congo), the Sanctions Committee 1636 (Lebanon), and the Informal Working Group on Documentation and other Procedural Questions.
At the beginning of every year, the Security Council adopts a decision appointing 22 chairs of the Security Council sanctions committees and working groups. Traditionally, permanent representatives of the 10 elected members to the Security Council are appointed to chair the Security Council committees and working groups. The permanent members of the Security Council may perform the functions of Vice-Presidents.
Lithuania was elected as a non-permanent member of the Security Council for the period of 2014-2015.
