LITHUANIAN AMBASSADOR SUPPORTED SYRIAN WOMEN'S EMPOWERMENT
On January 17, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Lithuania to the United Nations ambassador Raimonda Murmokaitė took part in closed “Arria formula” meeting of the United Nations Security Council on Women’s participation in resolving the Syrian conflict.
“My country strongly supports women’s empowerment and full women’s participation at all stages of conflict settlement and reconstruction leading to development, also in order to make sure that women’s rights are safeguarded and promoted in any political solution,” – said Ambassador Murmokaitė.
Ambassador noted that women can act a crucial role in rebuilding communities and country, therefore their inclusion is an essential factor providing guidance to the process of justice and reconciliation.
The meeting was attended by Security Council members and representatives of the Syrian Women’s League, Syrian Women’s Network and the Syrian Women’s Coalition for Democracy. “Arria formula” meetings are informal gatherings which enable Security Council members to have a frank and private exchange of views as well as to engage in a direct dialogue with representatives of Governments, international organizations and nongovernmental organizations on matters which fall within the responsibility of the Security Council.
