Preparations for Nuclear Security Summit were discussed in New York
Lithuanian Foreign Minister presented Lithuania’s input in promoting nuclear safety, energy security projects of the country, Lithuania’s experience in closing the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant and implementation of the new nuclear power plant project.
According to the minister, Lithuania is firmly committed to active engagement in international organisations of nuclear states and is ready to fully participate in the Summit in South Korea.
Special Assistant to the U.S. President expressed support for further close cooperation between the United States and Lithuania on the nuclear safety issues.
The first Nuclear Security Summit was held on 13-14 April 2010 in Washington on the initiative of the U.S. President Barack Obama and focused on the efforts to prevent illicit trafficking of nuclear substances (highly enriched uranium and separated plutonium) and nuclear terrorism. Next Summit is to take place on 26-27 March 2012 in South Korea.
Lithuanian Foreign Minister participated in the 66th UN General Assembly on a delegation led by Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaitė.
