The President of Lithuania met with the UN Secretary General
President Gitanas Nausėda met with António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations. During the meeting, the President expressed support for the UN Program of Action, whose priorities include maintaining peace and security around the world and assisting states in conflict resolution. The President also said he backed the UN reform initiated by the Secretary-General aimed at bringing about changes in the systems of peace and security, organizational development and governance.
“We understand the need to enhance effective multilateral cooperation therefore we support the implementation of the UN reform. I firmly believe that these changes lead to a more sustainable future for all of us”, said the President.
The President presented our country’s contribution to the UN activities: Lithuania is a candidate for the UN Human Rights Council in 2022-2024 and the UNESCO Board of Governors 2021-2025. The President also reminded that Lithuania was a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council in 2014-2015.
The President presented to the UN Secretary-General his vision of a welfare state which is the basis of his five-year program. The President said that the realization of his vision of the welfare state in Lithuania is in line with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development approved by the United Nations.
