MINISTRO LINKEVIČIAUS PASISAKYMAS JT DARNAUS VYSTYMOSI TEMA
Allow me to congratulate everyone on this very special occasion.
Establishment of the HLPF strengthens institutional framework on sustainable development. By enhancing coherence and coordination, and by integrating its key three dimensions: economic, social and environmental. It is one of the major outcomes of the Rio+20 Summit. We all know that we need to accelerate the achievement of MDGs before 2015; we also know that we need to pull our shoulders together shaping a new development agenda.
Business as usual is not an option anymore. A new universal development agenda should reinforce the international community’s commitment, both, to poverty eradication and sustainable development. Lithuania believes this Forum will serve these goals.
First of all, we hope it to serve as a dynamic platform for innovative ideas and approaches in how to achieve the sustainable future. Because sustainable lifestyles and new jobs cannot be achieved by single actors alone. All need to join efforts: governments, civil society, private sector, and academia. And be innovative by building networks and forging partnerships.
Capacities, ideas and experience from all relevant stakeholders need to be bundled up. Moreover, Lithuania strongly believes that providing equal opportunities, especially for women and young people, helps creating jobs and enhancing progress. We also strongly support the grassroots approach, that lets local demands lead the promotion of sustainable lifestyles and create new job opportunities.
We all have good experiences nationally that we can share here. As governments, we shall not only adopt and promote certain regulations, but also incentivize bottom-up approach to sustainable development. The leading businesses as well as small entrepreneurs shall employ new responsible business models. Customers shall be educated and inspired.
We all have to work together to achieve the better life and achieve this vision. To this end, we hope for substantive work of the HLPF.
